The planets or "wanderers" are a favorite for observing
because of their ever changing nature and their relatively
close proximity to earth. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter
and Saturn were the only planets known to the ancent world.
After the telescope was invented, Uranus was discovered followed
by Neptune after an intense search. Tiny Pluto was not found
until the 1930s. With an amatuer sized telescope, all of these
planets can be seen. I have personally observed all of the
planets except for tiny Pluto. Uranus is relatively easy to
see and appears as a nice greenish blue ball. Neptune is somewhat
more difficult and appears as a very tiny blue dot almost
indistinguishable from a slightly fuzzy star. Tiny Pluto appears
as nothing more than a faint point of light indistinguishable
from a distant star.
